MILWAUKEE - Students from the Milwaukee High School of The Arts marched to the MPS Administration building Tuesday to protest funding cuts at their school.

They carried a coffin. Ryan Krueger says it symbolizes "the day the music died."

The students joined hundreds of parents and teachers who came to the first district budget meeting.

Next year's budget will be painful for MPS. A budget shortfall threatens art, music and physical education positions. Superintendent Bill Andrekopoulos says employee benefit costs are rising drastically while enrollment and state aid is down.

Students at the city's arts high schools say the cuts could change their whole education.

"To many the arts are the only reason they come to school," said Krueger.
